Book Reviews of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: A Novel

Book Review: "Extremely" funny and "incredibly" moving - generously entertaining!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is pure genius. Told from the perspective of an 8-year old boy whose language is as much endearing as it is hilarious even when surprisingly forward and "grown-up" for a boy his age; "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" is laugh-out-loud-funny in parts and incredibly touching in others. Young Oskar Schell's reference to the "worst day" is in itself such a moving expression of how a little boy deals with a horrifying experience and the loss of a loved one. I couldn't read fast enough to know what would happen or slow enough to prolong the pages for as long as I possibly could.

Oskar is at once loveable...amusing in his curiosity, endearing in his caring heart and simply a child in that he deals with loss in a way children only can - on one hand he is so relentless and rational in needing an explanation and closure for his fathers death but on the other he is utterly charming in how his little creative mind can listen to a completely fictional fairytale and believe in his father so much not to question its facts.

The characters are each so quirky that you come to realize that despite some rather weird idiosyncrasies, love cannot be controlled. It seems hard to imagine that this book is not based on real people. I wish I could meet these characters and question them for the little things they said or didn't say or did or didn't do. The book is so brave in that it addresses one of the greatest news stories of our time from such an objective lens and is so honest in its delivery of the thoughts and emotions one has...perhaps the fact that the narrator is a child makes some of it easier to handle and brush off as `normal'. Little Oskar is so determined to crack the mystery of his father's death and is all at once so eager to hang on to his memory but so realistic in knowing that wont be the case forever. He is a special little boy who will immediately win you over. This story is intertwined with that of his grandparents and it is so interesting how we examine two generations - both linked to a character in the middle whose identity we get to experience only through their mourning and the images they so vividly portray.

Just like the word love that traveled from one tin can to another across a piece of string was captured in a now-frozen little tin can that now rests on a frozen shelf in a frozen room on a frozen island floating in Antarctica...this is a book whose memory you want to freeze and forever cherish. It is a candid wake-up call to never take for granted those you love.
