Book Reviews of Eye of the Needle

Book Review: "It is as easy to get into heaven as it is for a camel to pass through the . . ."
Summary: 5 Stars

EYE OF THE NEEDLE is a classic of the espionage genre, and very arguably, the best of Ken Follett's many works. Tensely and tautly written, Follett not only places us deftly inside each intricate scene, but also inside the minds of his characters, each of whom is a complex, multidimensional human being.

In thrillers it is far too easy to fall back on stock characters and canned plots, but in EYE OF THE NEEDLE, Follett is writing history that might have been.

The unexceptional Englishman Henry Faber is in reality the extraordinary German spy "Die Nadel" (The Needle), known for his secretiveness, his effectiveness, and his trademark stiletto. In the early months of 1944, The Needle discovers that the planned Allied invasion of the Pas de Calais is a vast hoax and that D-Day will occur at Normandy.

While trying to get back to Berlin with this vital information, The Needle finds himself caught up in the unhappy marriage of Lucy and David. David is a mustered-out unblooded RAF fighter pilot who has been rendered a double amputee as the result of a freakish auto accident. Never having gotten into the cockpit and having been reduced to a helpless cripple (in his own mind), David takes his only pleasure in tormenting Lucy, a loving wife. When The Needle appears, handsome, sophisticated, and sexy, Lucy becomes his willing sexual partner.

When Lucy realizes The Needle's true identity, a small war erupts on the isolated farmstead where she lives with David in his miserable emotional exile. A small war, by which hangs the balance of the World War.

EYE OF THE NEEDLE is a book that is readable and re-readable many times over. Follett's gifted storytelling never palls, and this book retains its dynamism even after the ending is known. It is often counted as one of the top ten espionage tales ever written, and it deserves the honor.
