Book Review: 1991 mystery/thriller/police procedural is third in Lucas Davenport series

This is the third of John Sandford's successful series of mystery/thriller/police procedural novels starring Detective Lucas Davenport of the Minneapolis Police Department. This story's pair of villains executes a "criss-cross" murder plot comparable to that of the novel and film "Strangers on a Train". Dr. Michael Bekker is an intensely drug-addled, schizophrenic pathologist and Carlo Druze is a lonely, disfigured stage actor. The book's title refers to Bekker's gruesome post-mortem treatments. Repercussions from the harrowing finale of the last book have left Detective Davenport depressed and nearly suicidal. Estranged from his girlfriend and toddler daughter, he makes a new female acquaintance while pursing the case. Most of the cast from the previous books is back, and the closing pages offer a surprising reveal about a supporting character. Fans of the first two books will probably enjoy this one as well. New readers should start with the first book "Rules of Prey".
