Book Reviews of FOOP!

Book Review: .
Summary: 3 Stars

Very clever and funny but there is a real disconnect between the lead and the narrative.

Book Review: A Great Debut
Summary: 5 Stars

The best way to describe this book is that it's a lot like a casserole. You start out with every sci-fi convention you can think of (robots, aliens, time travel, dystopias, the end of the world), throw them into bowl, pour in a few cups of Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams, add a pinch of Samuel Beckett, a couple slices of Terry Gilliam, a dash of Looney Tunes, and put it in the oven. In about 3 hours, you'll have something sort of like Foop!

Genoa does a great job as the chef, putting all of these things together perfectly and creating a hilarious and truly original first book. It's a wild and bizarre ride that I highly recommend.

Book Review: A Great Read
Summary: 5 Stars

The best thing about this book is that truly anyone can find something they like about it. It's funny and interesting, appealing to both sci-fi fans and people who have never picked up a sci-fi book in their life. Genoa's style is incredibly tight and witty, and he moves through the story quickly as to always keep you entertained. I highly recommend this book - buy it for yourself or as a gift for someone who wants to fall into a fun, exciting, hilarious adventure.

Book Review: A Weird Book
Summary: 5 Stars

Oh yeah, this book is weird. I think anyone would agree with that. It's especially weird because the whole thing takes place through the eyes of this guy Joe who is a very disturbed person with some frequently bizarre ideas. Reading the book is like watching a pinball get flinged from one weird situation to another. For example at one point Joe sort of accidentally has sex with someone while rolling around on the ground on a Native American Reservation. This happens while he's supposed to be leading a tour group. And then there's the tea party he has with a monkey, a leader of a cult religion, and the women he accidentally had sex with. I'm not even going to mention what was in their tea pot.

This isn't a light hearted book by any means and a lot of it is marked by a sense of desperation by Joe. He's very much a lonely character searching for meaningful contact in a world gone mad. If it wasn't for the constant humor in the book it would be a very depressing story for sure.

All in all it's a disjointed and very post modern book that can be funny, weird, and sad at the same time. I enjoyed it very much. And I would like to crawl into Genoa's head sometime because it must be a freakshow in there.

Book Review: A Wild Ride
Summary: 5 Stars

Foop! simply is the funniest and wildest book I've read in a long, long time. In fact, I can't even think of any other book that made me bust out and laugh as much as Foop! did. I kept handing the book to my friends and saying, "You have to read this part!"

I think Foop! is more for fans of writers like Chuck Palahniuk, because while it is really funny it's also kind of heartbreaking too. The main character isn't some kind of goofy twit like you'd find in other comedic novels. Deep down he's a pretty sad guy who stumbles into a really bizarre and ultimately tragic adventure.

Also, like a bunch of other reviewers have said, it's nothing like traditional science fiction. So don't read it expecting to get Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett. Genoa is much darker than those guys.

So if you're looking for some prim and proper droll humor (like the boring stuff you'd find in The New Yorker), you'd better check out someone else. Chris Genoa isn't Douglas Adams, Kurt Vonnegut, or any other old or dead writer. He's just Chris Genoa, and that's just the way I like him.
