Book Reviews of FOOP!Book Review: Kilgore Trout Anyone? Summary: 3 Stars
Chris Genoa's debut novel is very Vonnegut-esque although some of the criticism I've read in other reviews is somewhat accurate. It was a very good read and very funny, especially because I have a penchant for monkeys. What could be funnier than a blind, chain-smoking monkey with a pre-disposition for hog-tying. I couln't help thinking of the sometimes mindless wanderings of Kilgore Trout in "Venus on the Half Shell." Disturbingly awkward at times and I believe, like Vonnegut, that the genius is in the nonsensical meanderings. Looking forward to his next works.
Book Review: Love it or hate it Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, I haven't come across a book that can inspire such hatred from some people and such love and praise from others in a long time. Just look at the reviews here: they're either 5 stars or 1!
Put me in the love and praise column because I loved it. I don't read much science fiction because I find a lot of it to be REALLY dull and boring, especially in the writing styles. But this book is anything but dull. First off, it's a very easy read and you can read it in a few days. It's also VERY funny, which makes the reading go by quickly because you're laughing a lot.
I think if you're a big sci-fi fan then you might not like this book. I even forgot I was reading a book labeled as sci-fi a few pages in, because the writing is stream of consciousness. Or maybe stream of comicness is a better description. Kind of like a wacked-out, futuristic, surreal On The Road, with a main character who is constantly thinking some truly hilarious stuff.
It's funny, but it's NOT happy go lucky. Overall the tone is dark and the outlook is very bleak. Especially the ending. So you might not want to read Foop if you're looking for something bubbly and lighthearted.
Three of my friends also read it. Two of them loved it and one hated it. Chances are you'll either love it or hate it too. But it's worth the risk because the people who do like it, REALLY like it.
Book Review: Loved it! Summary: 5 Stars
I really enjoyed Foop! and simply can not wait for more of his stuff to get published. The story was whimsical but still had a serious note of social commentary. His writing style would make me laugh if the plot of book was a guy reading a cereal box.
Buy it, read it, give it to a friend!
Book Review: MINDGLOWING! FANTASTIC READ! Summary: 5 Stars
Great 1st book from the demented mind of Genoa. It feels like your sitting 3 stones from the sun when reading each page and it just gets more bizzare with every turn. I don't know if I would call it sci-fi like everyone else, I feel he's creatd a whole new gnere. I agree it does make you think about the choices in life and the outcome from those choices...especially my own. Can't wait for the next bomb from the mind of this lunatic.
Book Review: Maybe if I started out with lower expectations... Summary: 2 Stars
So I usually don't review books because, hey- to each his own, but I was so very disappointed with this book. I read some of the reviews comparing it to several different authors' works, and having read most of those other authors, I can say that maybe my expectations were way too high.
Like the goth kid in a prep school, the book tries too hard to be different and surreal. Everything about this book felt contrived, by the end of the book I still didn't care about what happened to the characters, and I didn't find it funny at all.
The story is about Joe, a time tour guide who is reassigned to find out who is torturing his boss. Joe is a guy. Thats all I can say about him, because although the book is written from his point of view, there is no depth to him or to any of the other characters. They just seem to go through these silly situations. Then a monkey appears, maybe because monkeys are silly and it might make people laugh.
I am giving this book two stars, but just for the ending. Most of the time I was so uninterested in what I was reading, I found myself skimming paragraphs. But the ending, although lazy (now lets try a sea lion!) was interesting to read. I liked the description in the last chapter- it reminded me of the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland. Plus, the fact that there was no big event at the end was better than any forced situation.
