This is such a good book, though very much on the dark side. If you ever wanted to know what it was like in mental institutions during the 40's and 50's, then this is a must read. While this is fiction, Janet Frame spent 8 years in a mental institution receiving over 200 shock treatments. She was mistakenly diagnosed as schizophrenic. The surroundings she describes are either close to or exactly what it was like back then. Again, a must read. Disregard the 1 star review.
