Book Reviews of Factotum

Book Review: Grim but Streetwise Ramble Through Underside of WWII America
Summary: 4 Stars

Bukowski followed the coming of age of Henry Chinaski covered in Ham On Rye with this rather sordid look at his young adulthood. Chinaski leaves home in LA and wanders across WWII era America drifting from meaningless job to meaningless job and flop house to flop house. There's a deadpan delivery as he relates his tale of drifting, drinking, whoring and losing job after job without seeming to care that gives the story an air of desperation and acceptance of a downward trajectory that seems inevitable to him.
Despite what sounds like a depressing story, reading factotum is like witnessing a train wreck. You can't look away even as you're shocked by what you see. Credit that to Bukowsi's sharp prose style and acerbic wit. I also enjoyed the portrayal of an already seedy downtown Los Angeles of the 40's.

Book Review: HARD LIFE
Summary: 5 Stars

bukowski, one of the most interesting writers in the world , is my favorite writer. With this book I learnt the other side of the life. Difficulties , dire straits , interresting jobs I never heart etc. This is a book that everybody, who has a comfotable life , have to read to see the other side of the life. You can learn more about the world and people

Book Review: Hollywood
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book. Bukowski is quite an interesting character and his unique view of the motion picture industry was fasinating and extremely entertaining.

Book Review: If you're starting on Bukowski- Start here.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm going to keep this review short and simple for you. This is the second book Bukowski wrote, and its a really good place to start if you are looking to get into Bukowski. The book is filled with short chapters that involve the years Bukowski called his "ten year drunk." The book chronicles his road trip around the United States, just at the time he was starting to become famous.

Its a quick read that includes many of the offbeat and unique observations that this guy makes about the world. You'll laugh every page.

Be careful, though. Reading Bukowski can completely change the way you look at things. The day after reading this book you'll have a little less regard for the little things that usually bother people, and a little more confidence in yourself.

Book Review: It gets no better.
Summary: 5 Stars

Charles Bukowski is wicked awesome. It's another book about Henry doing exactly what Henry does. I think it's a love it or hate it kinda thing. Chances are, if you hate it, you're a bafoon. Did I spell bafoon correctly?
