Book Reviews of Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America

Book Review: A good 'souviner' addition to your collection
Summary: 4 Stars

OK, well these days when you're talking Cap you're obviously talking Ed Brubaker, but don't worry i won't bother boring you with my love for that guy like (everyone else does that for me)- just go and buy everything that man writes as its hands down the best material available in comics today.
Onto this collection- unless you've been living under a rock for the last year, Cap was murdered after handing himself in to the IronMan and the authorities at the end of Civil War (as seen in Cap #25). The events during that saga and it's ramifications afterwards are currently being told in brubakers (excellent) ongoing Cap series, but Marvel were always going to capitalise on such a big shock event and bring out a load of spin off/tie-in issues/collections realting to his death outside of the main storyline and this series - Fallen Son - is one of them. I don't usually go for such spin offs as they are often poorly executed, cheaply-produced money making stories which aren't any good, but i'm pleased to tell you this ones different.. it's great! Firstly who wrote it- Jeph Loeb (Batman Hush etc.). He came up with the idea of writing a 5 part series which handled the reaction of Cap's closest friends and allies to his death, each titled a different stage humans go through when faced with grief (Jeph Loeb was specifically asked if he would do this because he tragically lost his own son to cancer in 2005 so knows a thing or two about pain and loss). So he wrote 5 issues e.g. Denial- Wolverine, Anger- New Avengers, Bargaining- Hawkeye, Depression- Spider-man and Acceptance- Ironman. All have different artists, my favourite of all being David Finch (Depression- Spider-man), simply stunning art and all his work is worth seeing (New Avengers, Moon knight). All of the stories are well written and Loeb portrays the characters feelings really well and creates a geniune sense of loss throughout the whole collection. I won't say that its the best story i've ever read, but it is good and an interesting collection to read (and own) especially because when i look back at major events in comics history (death of Gwen Stacey in the Amazing Spider-man prime example), i always wonder what it would have been like to be around at that time and have read those issues as they happened (rather then as collections years later which is what im doing now with so many big events over the last 40 years), and i guess the "death of Captain America" is one of those huge events for "our generation" of comic readers, if that makes sense to you lot(?). Anyway, thats why i call this a good 'souviner' collection to own because its a great souviner of this big event which i'll look back at one day and think- yeah i was around when cap died and read the actual comic he died in and all the related material at the time.
That may well be the saddest thing i've ever written (i'm a 26 year old male..), i'm not sure.. but i do love comics and hey, i'm bored at work so there you go. Either way, the Hardcover presentation is a really nice touch and theres worse things you could spend ?8 on i can assure you.
