Book Review: A Dark Piece

In many ways, there are turn arounds in the book that tend to make one want to look back in past chapters to confirm some facts. Doing this, one can connect with the characters by trying to know everything about them. That's very important because it helps to predict the behavior for a few of them, and throws you for a loop with others. The reason for the double take was because I felt enough connection that I wanted to make sure one or another wasn't going down a dark path, while determining if others were even worthy of redemption. In essence, it's a very good study of a dark mind.
However, there are several mistakes, especially in the area of profiling. With that in mind, it would be a fallacy to compare this to Silence of the Lambs. As far as the comparison to Hannibal Lector, it falls short due to the perp's past. Most of all, trying to create a composite Hannibal shows a lack of imagination. Lector is very fascinating, but one must remember that he is a fictional serial type, and is therefore shown in a glorified light. The agent that's being compared to Clarice Starling falls short in several ways, including the many instances when she acts out of protocol, as well as trying to handle the case on her own. Starling was actually very methodical in the research and procedures to find Buffalo Bill. She questioned witnesses accordingly, and only acted out of protocol on rare occassions. In fact, Clarice was actually good at what she did, while this character was not.
Now, while the FBI does try to find consultants in one field or another, they will look at their own roster for specialists before going to an outside source. This goes within the protocols of law enforcement procedure. As far as the serial killer behavior, there is a likelihood that the murders are more about one's fantasies, as opposed to reliving the more traumatic moments of their lives. If one forgets that basic principle, one may not be able to really understand the mind of a serial type. There's one more thing to consider, the final solution to this book is rather flimsy and obvious. While some things may ring true, others may be a little hard to accept. The use of modern slang on a constant basis is a little childish at best, making one step back and try to understand the immaturity of some of the characters. This takes away from the story in a lot of instances. The idea of sending evidence directly to the authorities is a good way to get caught. That goes against a serial's basic survival instinct. They want to leave as little as possible behind, not a major piece of evidence that will definitely implicate them. While a serial type may wish to take part in the investigation, they will not be so blatent in the release of information to the authorities. There are several questions one is left with, having to do with how the perp was able to act out several times without discovery, especially in a public facility. Once again, there are some errors in this writer's thinking that may depict that Not a lot has been researched in-depth.
