Book Review: A bit thin and feeble all told.

While this wasn't a bad idea for a book - an encyclopedia of neglected gems from the horror genre - the wheels fall off the wagon pretty early on. The first problem is in defining what qualifies as an unsung classic? Some of the entries are fully justified, but many more are dubious.
Is 'Day of the Dead' obscure? Really? Most horror fans I know own a copy and many rate it as director George Romero's best picture. Maybe 'Martin' would have been a better pick. How about 'Pumpkinhead'? Hardly high budget, certainly, but pretty high profile within the genre. I'd say anything that warranted a big studio remake, sequels, or cash-in merchandise is unlikely to qualify as a lost classic.
This wouldn't have mattered so much if the book itself was stronger. The author's judgement is also somewhat suspect. It is, of course, all a matter of taste, but is 'Swamp Thing' really a forgotten masterpiece? The focus is very much on more recent flicks, and there's little before 1975 and nothing in black and white. Again a matter of taste, but a flaw in this horror fan's view.
Reviews are dominated by plot synopses, that frequently come irritatingly close to spoilers, and the writing itself has an awkward sophomoric quality. Plus, there's not much of it. Each film enjoys a few, heavily spaced, paragraphs, giving the impression of paddding. Production values are so-so - some colour would have gone a long way towards brightening things up.
Overall, if you're a horror fan, chances are you will have seen most of the movies in this book. It's certainly not the worst horror movie guide out there, but equally far from the best. Unless you really are a newcomer to the genre and enjoy plot synopsis over analysis, I'd look elsewhere.
