Book Review: A portable encyclopedia of mythological creatures

The Fantastical Creatures Tarot is fantasy themed tarot which focus on creatures from our world collective mythologies. In fact, this deck is more than just another tarot deck, it's a portable illustrated encyclopedia of mythological creatures.
This beautifully illustrated deck by Lisa Hunt is definitely not for beginners. It is difficult to tell the meaning of a card by just looking at the image on it unless you are already familiar with the creatures depicted.
The imagery in these cards are surrounded with an ornate vine-like border. These cards are labeled in English within a scroll at the bottom.
The Major Arcana are numbered at the top with roman numerals, starting at 0 with The Fool. On these cards, The Devil has been renamed Chains. This happens to be one of my favorites cards, which depicts the great wolf Fenris safely chained until Ragnarok, a nod to the norse mythology.
The Minor Arcana are labeled at the top with a symbol corresponding to their suits: wands, swords, pentacles and cups. As expected, creature from related elements are grouped within the suits. Water creatures are shown in cups, and earth creatures in pentacles. However, the suit correspondence for wands and swords has been swapped; air creatures are shown in wands and fire creatures in swords. These cards subtly incorporate the suit symbols within the imagery.
The deck comes with two quick reference cards, one for the Major Arcana, and another for the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana are referenced by name, creature's name and short phrase. The Minor Arcana are referenced just by name and short phrase. These reference cards are great, but it would have been better if the reference card for the Minor Arcana included the creature's name, which they probably drop due to space limitations.
There is also a fold-out mat which contain five layouts: Present Life Challenges, The Pyramid, Decision Layout, Changes Layout, and Expanded Celtic Cross. Unfortunately, the mat is not big enough to place the cards on the layouts.
I recommend this deck for tarot collects who like fantasy or creature themed decks. This deck come with a fitting box, a Little White Book and a fold-out layout mat.
