Book Reviews of Fashion For ProfitBook Review: Great resource Summary: 5 Stars
Good starter text for anyone looking for build an apparel biz from ground up. Have been using it as a reference tool for months now!
Book Review: Okay, but there's better out there Summary: 3 Stars
I was considering buying this book until I checked it out from the library. I read it book cover to cover- and while it does do a good job of addressing the ins and outs of the fashion business, I felt that The Fashion Designer Survival Guide by Mary Gehlhar is a better value (and cheaper too!). Gehlhar's book covers 95% of the same info and also includes interviews with other designers.
This book was also riddled with misspellings and seemed hastily put together. While its not a bad resource per se, if you're only going to buy one book on the subject, I would choose a different one.
Book Review: Too bad. Summary: 3 Stars
Like the other reviewers have stated, this book is FULL with typos and all kinds of mistakes. I have not read the main competitor to it, The Fashion Designer Survival Guide, so take this review as it is.
The information is GOOD and for someone who isn't in the industry, you will find a lot of things you had no idea about. The appendices are good, but they are US-only. Everything that is legal is US-only, but it's understandable: you wouldn't start a business without an attorney and a bookkeeper.
The later chapters start getting smaller and smaller, and while this is understandable, as you don't really have a lot to write about Selling on the Internet, for example, they feel extremely old for someone tech-savvy. They feel hastily put together, but I might have felt this because I was eager to finish the book.
The main bad point that caused me to rate this a 3/5 is the fact that it recommends for a new company to start in the betterwear segment, yet all the examples and steps for producing garments are better suited to the likes of NIKE, not some premium label like Givenchy.
Book Review: Very Informative For the Fashion Professional Summary: 5 Stars
Francis Harder covers so much information, its hard to pick out what was the most informative. A definite must read if you have started your business already or are getting ready to.
Book Review: great tips, distracting mistakes Summary: 4 Stars
While far better than The Fashion Designer Survival Guide, this book is rampant with just as many (if not more) spelling, grammar and syntax errors which can be quite distracting. I mean, how hard would it have been to get a proof-reader?
The information in the book still makes it a hands-down best choice.
