Book Reviews of Fast Food My WayBook Review: No flash in this pan Summary: 2 Stars
This book won't turn me off to JP, who I admire very much for his style of cooking and pleasant personality; but the book was a bit boring. Once I gleaned the book, my usual "How can I decide what to cook first?" didn't hit me. I picked up the book again with the same results -- just not enough inspiring stuff there. I haven't looked at the book since; so I can't even say this or that recipe was lackluster. I only remember my response to the book. It wan't the 'fast food' concept either because everyone needs quick recipes in the cooking repertoire. I cook a lot. I'm not a cookbook collector; my cookbooks are stained and tattered. I'm afraid "Fast Food My Way" will remain in pristine condition until I can give it to someone who will assign it more value than I can. Each book I have on the shelf has to carry its weight or it's off to the pantry -- my culinary Siberia for cookbooks -- where this cookbook now resides. For some reason I found JP cooking from this book on TV much more pleasurable than entertaining the idea of cooking from this cookbook.
Book Review: Not as practical as I hoped. Summary: 4 Stars
Although I'm a fan of Jacques Pepin, this book is not nearly as practical as I hoped it would be. For a "fast food" book, it has a lot of long ingredient lists that are intimidating for someone trying to cook on a busy weeknight or not spend a long time at the grocery store. I also found many instances of expensive ingredients, that I would use occassionally, but not for practical everyday use: for example, Gruyere cheese. We love gruyere cheese, but $10 for cheese is not something we want to splurge on very often. I was also disappointed that there are only 5 chicken entrees here. We use chicken more than any other meat because of it's low cost, so we would really hope to see more chicken entrees in a "practical" cookbook for "everyday" cooking. Meanwhile there are 15 fish/shellfish recipes - a splurge for us because of the expense. BUT, having said all that, there are still some good recipes here that do not require expensive ingredients or have intimidating ingredient lists for everyday, busy-person cooking. I also like the fact that Pepin makes menu suggestions, because not having to create the menu is one less step! The desserts deserve a special honorable mention - quick, uncomplicated, and delectable. This could have been better in my opinion, but I think it still merits a place in any serious cook's library.
Book Review: On of my favorite Summary: 5 Stars
Jacques Pepin is wonderful. The recipes that he propose are so simple but yet so delicious. Really in a few minutes you will be able to make a wonderful meal. I would recommend it to anyone who does not want to spend hours in the kitchen. I also have Simple and Simply Delicious by Sylvie Rocher. Those two books are great!
Book Review: Oustanding cook book Summary: 5 Stars
This book does everything you expect from a master chef! R. Ray should pay heed to his recipes as he allows anyone to make his delicious recipes
Book Review: Pepin is the best.... Summary: 4 Stars
Julia is not with us any more, Pepin does a great job of making 'gourmet' cooking approachable. His passion for cooking and good food is clear, without the gimmicks celebrity chefs use.
