Book Reviews of Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American MealBook Review: A Lesson on the Free Market Summary: 4 Stars
The myths of the free market and free trade in America are debunked brilliantly here. Schlosser shows how the wealthy exploited people, regulations, and property with the government as an accessory in order to achieve their fortunes.
An example: J.R. Simplot didn't start with 'nothing' and build a fortune. He stole an idea, raped timber from national parks and reserves for power, and illegally mined a sovereign reservation. What a self-made man he was!
The horrors of the food are nothing compared to the horrors of exploitation.
Great read.
Book Review: A Must Read! Summary: 5 Stars
Decline in the hourly wage, appalling working conditions, union busting, unsanitary practices from the slaughterhouse to the kitchen, a food economy dominated by giant corporations, homogenization of American consumer culture, threats to independent business, destruction of the American diet and landscape, children left prone to disease and obesity, widespread circumvention and outright dismissal of governmental attempts at regulation--the list of indictments pours out in investigative journalist Eric Schlosser's first book Fast Food Nation.
I thought this book would change my opinion of the fast food industry. Instead, it changed my perspective on our entire economy. A must read. It's insightful and entertaining. I never thought I'd find a nonfiction book this hard to put down.
Book Review: A Must-Read for All Summary: 5 Stars
I believe this book should be required reading in school, especially in our nation of obese and fast-food addicted adults and children. It's homorous, insightful, well written, and thoroughly researched. I cannot praise it enough!
I have not been to a fast food chain in 3 years since reading this book-- not for their low quality products (which is the most encompassing premise of the book), but for the unfair labor practices of the industry (which this book also covers in detail).
Heads up: Schlosser goes into graphic detail about the meat packing industry. Although it did not have the same effect on me, this book has been known to convert some of my friends to vegeterianism.
Book Review: A critically important book for our times! A 'must read'! Summary: 5 Stars
In short, this is a critical and truthful book (it is well documented and researched with ample footnotes) that exposes many of the unethical, dangerous, and downright shocking practices of the fast food and meat industries. Mr. Schlosser delves into the ugly politics and lobbying that has negatively influenced the safety of our food, and how mass production and profit margins have affected our food quality and safety. The book is riveting and hard to put down. I usually take weeks to read a book, but took 2 days to finish this masterpiece. A 'must read', if only to educate yourself on the topics at hand, and/or to spur you on to become politically active for the sake and safety of our children (and adults obviously) when it comes to the quality and safety of much of our food supply.
Book Review: A frightening look at the fast food industry Summary: 4 Stars
If you like eating Mcdonalds, Burger King, and others this book may make you think twice before you munch that next burger. Fast Food Nation is a frightening look at the way the fast food industry controls America. If you are interested in what is in your fast food burger I recommend this book.
