Book Reviews of Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal

Book Review: A good read.
Summary: 4 Stars

This book will make you want to stop eating fast food. I know it has been said over and over again, but, it is worth saying it yet again. It is amazing to learn the devasting effects our food production system has not only upon consumers' bodies, but also upon industry employees and our natural environment.

A good companion read with Omnivore's Dilemma, which focuses on veggies as opposed to Fast Food Nation's focus upon beef.

Book Review: A great book or a propaganda?
Summary: 3 Stars

I read this books a few years back and find it very informative. It tells you of how the fast food industry acquires their food and what the food goes through before getting to your table.

You will find these informations very informative.

At the end, the book mentions that "In N Out burger" prepare their food different and treat their employees better than all the other fast food restaurants in the fast food industry.

At the time I did not think much of it and thought highly of "In N Out Burger." But now I wonder if this book is just a propaganda for "In N Out Burger?". My experience with "In N Out Burger" does not impress upon me anything special about "In N Out Burger".

So there are two way of looking at this book.

1) This is a very good book that reveal many faults of the fast food industry.
2) This is a book trying to make everyone else look bad and "In N Out Burger" look good.

But my advice is to stop eating out except maybe once in awhile. Learn how to cook.

Go to the market and buy foods, meats, vegetable & fruit and cook it at home and it eat. Buy organics if you can. It will saves you lots of money and your food will be much healthier for you.

And if you can, buy a High Security Lock with Key Control system that prevent unauthorized duplication of your keys. This will prevent the gremlins from getting inside your house and spoil your foods early to discourage you from eating at home.

Book Review: A guide to awareness
Summary: 5 Stars

Great book. The movie does not do this book justice. While reading it I began doing research on the school lunch program in the city I live in and was appauled. I have since written many letters to the editor of the newspaper and have started to get many other parents involved in the nutritional safety of their children. This is a must read, if you care about your health and your children's

Book Review: A hard look at not only fast food, but the beef industry
Summary: 5 Stars

WOW...
And I don't say that so much because of the things this books brings to light about the fast food industry. I actually say it because of all the horrifying things I've learned about the BEEF industry! I never would have imagined what goes into raising cattle (the disgusting things they are fed), killing them and then turning them into meat. The dangers that these processes bring upon us as consumers of this beef (mad cow etc.) And the fact that the government is barely, if at all, regulating this?! Because they are "all in bed" with the beef industry! WOW. I am seriously considering from now on buying organic beef. I hope that in the next ten years that this government will start putting in place some better protection for us as beef consumers, at the time this book was written they were not allowed to re-call beef, nor were they able to inspect the factories....definitely a book worth reading and hopefully it continues to get noticed, make waves and bring upon some change.

As for the reading, it was dry at times, but for the most part interesting. I think it was very well written. It was helpful how it was broken down into chapters dealing with different aspects- made it easy to follow the argument and then grasp the sum-up of it all at the end, and how each part ties together. From the chapters on how fastfood/McDonalds got it's start, to the look at "why the fries taste so good", or what's in the beef, to the look at the meat processing plants...the author certainly seemed to do his homework, because he was nothing if not thorough. If Schlosser were to write a follow up, years down the road, I'd definitely read and will certainly recommend this to friends!

Book Review: A history of greed
Summary: 5 Stars

The book explains what happens when faceless corporations take care of the food business. The independent producers are forced out of business, the nature is manipulated and workers are exploited.
The worst aspect is that the children are one of the main target of these companies that craft their ads and products to appear attractive to youngsters.
They package all their junk full of fats, chemical and unhealthy products together with little colored gadgets of famous animation characters. This makes wonders in luring the toddlers ( and their parents ).
The book does a good job in describing these disgusting strategies.

One section that I found very interesting was the one dedicate to flavors, complex chemicals that give actual taste to the food. They are formulated with hundreds of different compounds mixed in the right proportions to trick our mouth.
Do you have an idea of what lies behind the common " strawberry aroma " ? Prepare yourself to be shocked.
