Book Review: As raw as the fat girl's thighs

"Fat Girl" certainly takes the fun out of dysfunctional. It is certainly well-written--well enough so that I wonder how much the author was able to manipulate me, but I have come to the conclusion that she was, in fact, being brutally honest. "Brutally" being the operative word here. "Fat Girl" returns you to the posture of childhood, when you are necessarily overpowered by the people who run your life. It's a hard read made even more discomfiting by simple and nearly affectless prose.
The book is explicitly one person's memoir. Judith Moore does not identify with anyone else, and if you identify with her that's your problem. She makes no effort to be politically correct. There is no sense of "closure", "acceptance", "peace" or whatever. It is certainly not uplifting. Life is unfair and there's only so much you can do about it.
Now for the stuff I didn't like: The nearly endless food porn, the paragraphs of self-revulsion when sentences would have done, and the sense Moore didn't finish the book as much as stop writing it (although she stated that she intended "Fat Girl" to be short).
Sadly, there will be no second helpings, as Judith Moore died last year.
