Book Review: A middlin' entry...

This is not the worst of the Goldy Bear catering mysteries, but it is pretty far from the best. The series was on my "must buy in hardcover" list for a long time, but then a few subpar entries, ones that just felt tired and forced, took it off. The last couple of entries pushed it back onto the list, but I think this one will push it back off.
The familiar cast is present, with even Father Pete making an appearance. In this one, Goldy has accepted a position catering a wedding for an enormously difficult woman, and I didn't quite get why she stayed on. Is there nothing that is considered "breach of contract" that would let her out of doing this nightmare? I suppose that's beside the point, since without the wedding and the craziness surrounding its planning, there wouldn't be much of a mystery.
Which brings me to Jack Carmichael. Here's a guy who is Goldy's godfather, and is tremendously important to her, but yet we've never heard of him (or Doc Finn, if I recall correctly) in any previous books. He's not a very sympathetic mid-to-old man. He's described as being in his 50's, but he's written like a crotchety old buzzard in his 70's. Everything about him feels off, from the fact that no one would think it strange that he kisses the young girl at the spa, to the way he seems to treat his own son, who is no prize himself, but...well...
I didn't hate it. I got through it, and parts of the book really engaged me. Julian is as cool a character as ever, and Marla and the other regulars are consistent and fun to read about. The key to the mystery is well thought out and well developed. But I can't recommend it without reservation, and I sorta wish I hadn't laid out the bucks for the hardcover. This series is back to paper for me.
