Book Review: A Modern Spiritual Hero

This book is extremely rewarding. Eugene Rose's spiritual and philosophical journey was riveting and exceptional. This was one spiritual seeker who was unrelenting in his search for truth. He pulled out all of the stops in his search, examining both eastern and western philosophy, studying Zen Buddhism under Allan Watts and Confucianism and Taoism under Gi-Ming Shien, and pretty much over-turning every philosophical stone he could find. Frustrated and disillusioned with modernity and shallow materialism, he was deeply inspired by Rene Guenon and the Perennial Philosophy to take tradition seriously and not to fall into the trap of armchair ecumenism. While originally interested in Chinese traditions, he turned to Eastern Orthodox Christianity through the encouragement of dear friends and the reading of Dostoevsky. In the Orthodox Church, he found the Truth he had been so diligently and passionately seeking in the person of Christ.
Father Seraphim Rose is a true anomaly and rarity in these times. His story, told by Hieromonk Damascene, is well worth a read... and a re-read. St. John Maximovitch, a modern saint and miracle worker, also plays a great role in this story. With the modern spiritual market place so filled with easy enlightenment and feel-good fluff, it is refreshing and challenging to read of a modern day spiritual hero who was willing to truly pick up his cross and die to himself. Father Seraphim was an American spiritual pioneer and a brave, tormented soul who found joy, peace, and purpose in Christ's mystical body, the Orthodox Church. His story will be engaging to those seeking a good story of a rare soul seeking truth in earnest, and will set the bar very high for, and hopefully inspire, Christians and spiritual strugglers of all walks. It may, also, encourage curious would-be converts to become baptized and to follow this man into the ascetic, holy life of the Orthodox Church.
Credit should be given to the author, too, who spins an intricate and enthralling yarn, and does so from a place of obvious love and admiration for his one-time spiritual father, Father Seraphim Rose.
