It took me about 80 pages before getting into the story. The historical originality of a Nazi super-state set in the mid 1960's is refreshing. That's the only thing I found palatable about this book. The storyline is predictable and its characters are stereotypes. Robert Harris writes about Germans, and Germans living under Nazism, like an Außenseiter (outsider). The world of "Fatherland" is a pastiche of massive gray and dreary government buildings (wow, what a surprise - have you been to D.C. lately?). Nazi Party leaders live in gaudy, over-decorated homes with heavy furniture while everyone else lives in dingy apartments. Despite technical advances in the novel (like television), we're supposed to believe life in Germany in the 1960's is as depressing and miserable as it was in the 1940's. Harris entirely overlooks the cultural explosion of the 1960's and it's global impact. The appeal of Nazism was its ability to attract people from all backgrounds. Nazi politics, like any ideology, would have adapted to the changing times. Instead, we're led to believe The German Reich is locked in a time warp. This is understandable, since it's doubtful Harris' book would have been published if he depicted a more cheerful and vibrant Germany under Nazism. You can guess the ending after the first 100 pages.
