Book Reviews of FeedBook Review: "Feed" - Generation Y's "1984" Summary: 4 Stars
For this Generation X teacher, G. Orwell's "1984" was a hokie sci-fi novel that I read in college and thought only the foolish would believe could/would happen. Little did I realize then that the concepts were real and bare comparison to a utopia that is still attempting to be molded 22 years later. "Feed" is Generation Y's version of Orwell's novel. M.T. Anderson does an exceptional job at giving a futuristic perspective at life with interactive Internet in our heads and the influence of corporations on every aspect of our lives. The audio-version added personality to characters and emotion that I may not have been able to read outloud with to my students. This was a great novel to reinforce literary elements and critical thinking skills. The profanity was tough to get through at first because there seems to be quite a bit of it. However, students were less affected by it because they felt that the profanity reflected an authentic teenage culture that would have been hard to capture without it. The book held my student's interest and created lively discussions. I would highly recommend this book for older adolescents who have a mature reading approach. This may not be a great selection for grades 9 (because of maturity) and under if used for directed classroom reading activities.
