Book Reviews of Fight Club: A Novel

Book Review: "Nothing was solved when the fight was over, but nothing mattered. "
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book because Palahniuk is my second favorite author and I have been working my way through all of his books.

Fight Club is about a generation of men without fathers, who through depersonalization and destruction of not only society but also self, seek to create a world living in the moment. The story begins when one of these fatherless men, the narrator, forms a split personality when unable to cope with the constraints, weight, and hopelessness of society. This separate identity, Tyler, is everything the narrator wishes it could be and more. Through assuming shared control of the narrator's body during the day and full control when he is "asleep," Tyler soon builds an Army of fight club members. These men come to fight for the same reason Tyler has been manifested which leads to his worship as a god while the narrator is still under the impression that Tyler is another human being. While all of this occurs both of the narrator's personalities share an unusual relationship with Marla Singer, a twisted woman who the narrator originally hates but Tyler wants. Eventually through Marla's involvement the narrator realizes Tyler is apart of him which lands him in a sky scraper packed with nitroglycerin intended to dismantle the past by destroying a major museum. The explosives fail, Tyler "dies," and the narrator ends up in a mental hospital delusional as ever.

This novel was easily one of the best I've ever read. The explanation is simple, as is with all of Palahniuk's books, his style makes the book. Palahniuk's style could be described as vivid, explosive, crass, and eloquent all at once. His style ties the plot and all of the outrageous incidents (many based on real life) together and makes for an exhilarating experience leaving one feeling as crazy as Tyler by the end. The material presented in Fight Club from the speeches intended to indoctrinate the space monkeys to the narrator's relief found between the bosoms of Bob is all presented in a very visceral manner which allows the reader to easily get within the narrator's confused mind. As well, although the subject of the fatherless men attempting to destroy any semblance of society, history, and themselves is quite outlandish; due to Palahniuk's organization, style, and filler it appears rational and accepted further allowing the reader passage into the narrator's mind. Overall I feel the book can be described as an intense journey into the trouble mind of the generation forgotten. I strongly recommend it.
