Book Review: A beautiful work.

Note to all readers, this is not a "how-to" manual on working with the orisha. There are few specifics, and the reader is meant to already know these specifics. If you do not know, the book says rightly to find an elder or use one of the books in her reference list. That said, it is a beautiful and necessary book for all orisha worshippers. As the author writes, in trying to be our highest selves, the best "we" we can be, we may at times fall down. But in the trying, the effort, getting up off the mat, we crown our heads.
Working with the orisha takes daily effort, and is not something we can do by rote. We cannot sit on the couch and watch TV and ask the orisha to do all of the work in our lives. We must become clean, clear vessels for the sacred ashe to flow through. That sacred ashe flows through all things, even those whose outward appearance may be one we may not like.
The author also provides some wonderful advice on working with our ancestors, the egun. While other authors proscribe specific rituals for this work, Tobe reminds us that this is spiritual work that does not mix well with "going through the motions". She gives you general ideas, and encourages you to find your own rituals for working with your ancestors. And for those of us who've had "issues" with our ancestors, she understands more than the reader might have guessed. The topic of ancestor relationships is tackled with grace and humility.
This is not for the beginner; if you seek specific information and patakis regarding the orisha, I recommend Baba Raul Canizares' works on them. However, if you are already on the path, and seeking more information on how to incorporate the orisha and their divine ashe into your life, this is a wonderful book on the topic.
