Book Review: Gold To Be Mined

I've had a chance to spend some serious time with this book/CD package and it's all that and not. For one it's a primer for the showcased artists and secondly a tease to get you to subscribe to Acoustic Guitar Magazine. There are 4 guitarists in particular that stand out for me,(I'm a technically minded player); Preston Reed 'Day At The Races', Peppino D'Agostino 'Bella Donna',John Williams'Sakura Variations', and Jacques Stotzem'Never Enough'. These guys are truly awesome technically gifted musicians. From the lactic acid inducing 260bpm 'Day At The Races' to the miraculously inventive 'Never Enough', to 'Bella Donna' and it's harmonic 12/8 time signature calisthenics to the progressive classical linear calculations of 'Sakura Variations'. I enjoyed Chris Proctor's duet with Pat Klobis (Bass guitar) on 'California Dreamin' but the middle part of his medley 'Paint It Black' was not transcribed. If you like the medley enough I suppose you could do that yourself but even with good transcription equipment this would be a laborious process. There are 'feel' guitarists on this 12 song collection who do well like Leo Kottke and Ed Gerhard and John Renbourne's dive back into the middle ages with Bourree 1 & 2 was an interesting academic experience for me although I'm not going to learn how to play it. Some of the music seems to be missing on Jacques tune but it's only 4 to 8 bars. I have no idea what happened there but I've gone over the tune numerous times and that section is just not in the transcription. If I later find that I'm mistaken I'll amend this review. 'Sakura Variations' is also extracted from a longer rendition but it isn't clear who comes in after John from the book. According to the book the entire recording is from a solo recital but that's not how it sounds to me. There is good stuff in this book. I recommed it !
