Book Review: 'Plain versus beautiful' an important theme in this book

This is Balogh at her very best. As a matter of fact, I think Mary Balogh is growing as a writer. 'First Comes Marriage' is the first book of hers I've read in which I actually laughed out loud. Elliott's verbal frustrations and internal monologues are hilarious at times. Elliott IS attracted to Vanessa from the start. That attraction evidences itself through anger and frustration with her. Elliott shows a preference for Vanessa from the moment he meets her, but his heart takes a while to acknowledge it. They are perfectly matched because they are so opposite. Elliott needs Vanessa's joyful outlook on life, and Vanessa needs to see herself as beautiful. Balogh carries the theme of plain versus beautiful throughout the book because that is the issue over which Vanessa stumbles. While everyone around her may find her outwardly plain, Elliott doesn't. He works to change Vanessa's view of herself throughout the novel, thus the repeated emphasis on her "plain looks." I found this first book in the trilogy to be excellent. As always, Balogh captures the Regency time period in language, characterization, and plot better than almost any other Romance author. She is able to write "tender" moments so well. But, in this new book, she also surprised me with her ability to write comedic scenes too. 'First Comes Marriage' has everything I want in a Romance. I closed the book with a sigh, completely satisfied. Bravo Balogh. You're better than ever.
