Book Reviews of First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers (P.S.)

Book Review: Riveting & painful
Summary: 5 Stars

Having a limited understanding of the Khmer Rouge genocide of the Cambodian people in the late 1970s, this book both educated and profoundly moved me. This girl's story is so painful, and so painfully written. She is angry, and after reading this, so am I. It is man's inhumanity to man in its most awful illustration. I was a teenager when this was happening, and I shudder to imagine what trivial drama I was engaged in while this author and her family were fighting for their lives against nothing less than pure evil. How do human beings do this to one another?! How?! I don't know if I'll ever really be the same again after reading this, but I'd read it again. This story -- and the millions of others like it -- are those awful stories that must be told, and we cannot look away, as much as we might want to. In today's world, where people seem to be looking for that one person who will "lead" them to all they think they want, we really need to look to history and stories like this one to remind us that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
