Book Reviews of Fish: A Memoir of a Boy in a Man's Prison

Book Review: Wow so many questions!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Dear Mr. Parsell

Me and my coworker just finished your book, Wow. I am a gay 21 year old boy and i was very touched by your book and also a little confused. I think you and Paul should be together, and you should go see him and update us, did he get out, and why is he dating a girl when he is suppose to be gay? I want an update! And what happened to slide step when you went back to riverside? I am dying to know? Your book has filled me with many emotions i didnt know i could feel. I feel suicidal at times and very depressed and when you look at my life, it isnt bad at all compared to what you have been through and you turned out great. it makes me want to live on and go finish college to make that six figure income like you and have a respectful job. I dont know what else to say, but i wish i could talk with you face to face someday.

Your New Fan,

Brandon Caire

Book Review: Geez... prison sucks!
Summary: 4 Stars

There was a small buzz on this book because some college class was reading it. After ringing it up about 5 times in the book store where I work I just had to read it myself. Wasn't sure what to expect and not quite sure what to think...

Why they would put a 17 year old boy in a prison with grown men is beyond me and then to have them turn a blind eye is just plain crazy. Yeah I beleive if you commit a crime then you should do the time but the time has TO FIT the crime!! Tim didn't deserve to get what he got and reading about it was pretty gritty.

Knowing that rapes go on in prison is a no-brainer. It's the butt (pardon the pun) of many stand up comics. But to read about it from someone who actually and truly went through it is something a little different. It was interesting and a bit sad to hear about the politics that go down with prison rapes and VERY interesting how there is actually a "difference" the in the defination of homosexuality of a man who forces another man to have sex and a man who is FORCED to have sex.

I do wonder how successful T.J. is with his stop prison rape commission. It must be frustrating to fight against something that (obviously) the majority of CO's, Wardens, shrinks, and the inmates turn a blind eye and have an "who cares" attitude. I do wish him the best. I really liked the end when he tells us what happens to some of the characters and the letters at the end are enough to wipe a few tears away.

Book Review: GREAT BOOK
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was one of my Favorite's for this year. I read about 4 books a month and this one is right at the top. I even brought this one to my book club to have all the other mothers read it and they all loved it!

Book Review: Powerful read
Summary: 5 Stars

This book really was very thought provoking, heartfelt, and even gut wrencing at times; but a incredible read! The author describes so poignantly what is often the subject of cruel jokes, it really is as if you are there experiencing it with him. He also finds ways to inject humor at the right times. It is such a consciousness raising book, it is hard to not have your perceptions changed for the better. The author so bravely gives a voice to so many who don't have one, and lets them know they don't have to live with the pain and shame alone. Very moving, I recommend it highly!

Book Review: Honest & Touching
Summary: 5 Stars

Fish is an honest and touching account of a teenager coming to terms with his sexuality while dealing with the horrors of prison. The story is told without pity or blame and the reader is immersed in the horrifying brutality of prison, yet the story is told with compassion and tempered with humor and glimmers of kindness. You will pick this book up and won't put it down until you've turned the final page and then you'll want to know more about the author, his life, and the cause he champions.
