Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind are V.C. Andrews first ever published works, now republished together in paperback form. Her first novel, Flowers in the Attic, is a story about the perfect family: A Mother, father, and four blonde haired, blue eyed children. It is a story that spans the course of four years. Upon the sudden death of their father, Carrie, Cory, Cathy and Chris, follow their mother to her parent's plantation home, only to discover a web of lies that forces their mother to earn back the love of an estranged father, leaving them as ghosts, locked in the attic. Forbidden to venture outside and governed by their Hilter-esque grandmother: The kids must learn lessons of lies, pain, death, forcing children to take roles of mother and father, and learn of betrayal and sex by experience.
Flowers in the Attic is a touching story that pulls on the very strings of your heart. Though anti-climactic, it is well plotted and flows easily. The only issue the readers may face is Ms. Andrews's portrayal of the brother/sister relationship.
V.C. takes us one step further in Petals on the Wind, continuing the children's story, as three of them escape and find themselves living with one Dr. Paul. The story follows Chris as he becomes a doctor, Carrie on her many hardships however, the story focus' mainly on Cathy and her sexcapades, ballet adventures, marriages, and most importantly plot for revenge.
Petals on the Wind is a disappointing attempt at a sequel to Flowers in the Attic. Filled continuously with sex and incestuous undertones the lack of clarity until Part three of this long novel leaves the reader questioning how all the bits and pieces come together. Unfortunately, the best section of the book is when the reader realizes Cathy's lust for revenge, the rest, consequently should have been laid to rest with Flowers in the Attic. I recommend the first novel to those looking for a touching yet intriguing story; however, do not be disappointed if the second book does not demand your attention.
