Book Reviews of Follow the RiverBook Review: Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best books of fiction I have ever read. If you can stand to get through the massacre scene at the beginning,( which is extremely violent, graphic and involves the murder of a baby),and read about the journey of this woman, you will be amazed. I cried and prayed for a woman who was long dead before I was ever born. The sheer strength of will, and spirit of survival is enough to put those of us living our comfortable lives to shame. Read this book, then read "Tecumseh; Panther in the sky" by Thom. Great books, teaching history, sociology, and geography while entertaining.
Book Review: Amazing Journey! Summary: 4 Stars
Very engrossing story of a young, pregnant woman making her way from Kentucky back to the Virginia settlement she was kidnapped from in 1755. Travelling an estimated 1000 miles, she managed to do so without serious injury to herself. Along her journey she had to make some very hard decisions. As I read the book, I was aware that it is written from a man's view writing as a woman. I kept thinking that this story would be even better written by a woman with her point of view. I did find myself rushing a little to finish the book in order to find out what happens to her and her family. Don't read the end until you've read the whole book! Over all well worth the money and time to read.
Book Review: Amazing, real life story Summary: 4 Stars
Our book group picked this after reading a string of modern day women's lit. What a change of pace and amazing story.
Our worry was that this historical account would be boring or void of beautiful stroy telling. It is not any of those things, for this book is detailed and descriptive, sweeping you away to this upsetting time for our nation. the author does well to portray the pain, courage, suffering and love of Mary Ingles. The indian massacre is not glazed over, and for many of our readers was very difficult to get past, especially the brutal murder of a young infant.
But the strength Mary musters together in order to save herself and return to her husband are completely inspiring. The journey she takes and the means she devised to survive are nothing short of astonishing, and humbling as a reader to imagine. I highly recommend this book to all interested in amazing true stories, as well as for the history of indian turmoil. It defintely sparked my interest to learn more about how our country survived such chaos in it's early years. And for an author to inspire us to learn more, I believe, is always a triumph.
Book Review: An Amazing Tale... Summary: 5 Stars
I have rafted parts of the New River and have witnessed how unforgiving the terrain can be. I have also hiked areas similiar to those described as part of Mrs. Ingles' journey. I know how challenging hiking in region can be with the proper modern equiptment, maps and adequate food. The author's descriptions of the wilderness were very accurate. I felt as if I were walking right along with Mary. It may sound like a cliche but I could feel her pain. The author used many vivid images that may not be for the faint of heart but for anyone who love stories about the true strength of the human spirit. This book is definitely for you.
Book Review: An English Class Review Summary: 4 Stars
Follow the River was a book I read in my junior year English class. Being 16 years of age and not being the same age as the character in the novel, I somehow found myself connected to Mary Ingles. As a reader, you start to place yourself in her shoes and imagine all the hardships. James Alexander Thom did a wonderful job writing this story by delicately describing every scene. Some may say that the story dragged on, but this concept was only for suspense. Follow the River has the classic happy ending that you just want to keep reading on. To enjoy this book you definitely need a nice fire, a cup of hot chocolate and the crisp smell of autumn in the air.
