TO THE READER IN NEW YORK WHO NEVER FINISHED THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT WAS"TOO GRAPHIC AND DEPRESSING". ALL I CAN SAY IS YOU CHEATED YOURSELF OUT OF A VERY GOOD READ. HISTORY IS BRUTAL AND GRAPHIC AND THE REALITY OF IT MAKES IT ALL THE MORE AWE INSPIRING THAT PEOPLE SURVIVED THESE THINGS. MARY IS AN INSPIRATION. I HAVE READ THIS BOOK A COUPLE OF TIMES AND HOPEFULLY MY DAUGHTER WILL PICK IT UP IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS. I KNOW SHE WILL ENJOY IT AS MUCH AS I DID.Book Review: Best historical novel ever written!!!!!

This dramatic true story is so impressive in the telling. It is a story that kept me turning the pages and then contemplating about the events experienced by the characters. So much integrity in the main character that she is someone I came to deeply admire and am ashamed of petty discomforts I have complained about in my life. I loved this story so much that I purchased 3 additonal copies to give as gifts and everyone who received the book has called me to discuss it with me and then lent their copy to a friend to read.
Now that's a good book !!

I couldn't rest until I finished this book! Mary Ingles went through an amazing ordeal. I was so involved in the story that I could hardly think of anything else for days. I felt like I was there with her, and I know I wouldn't have been strong enough to do the things she did. I know this book has changed my life for good. Often when I think my life is hard, I remember Mary, and I realize that I have it pretty good.
I would definitely NOT recommend this book for children. It has some very disturbing and graphic themes.
