I really wanted to like this book but it just had too many issues.
Firstly, the romantic pacing of the novel is off. Up until page 202 out of 303 ( two thirds of the book), I thought I was reading a chaste romance. There was just no umph!! They had been dating and there was no type of sex scene. Then Wham-Bam. Followed by a prelude to a sex scene then nothing. The heat on this book was not happening.
Secondly, I thought that the subplot was almost like a separate parallel story and was only indirectly tied to main characters in the end. The character Janet was obsessed with Holly's friend Ben(who is godfather to Holly's daughter) and not the either of the main characters Tyler or Holly. I thought this subplot had too much prominence, detracting from the romance and focusing on suspense.
Lastly, I find it unrealistic to believe, even in America today, that race is not an issue. Nowhere in the book is there any mention by either of the characters or persons with whom they interact about the difference in their race. No funny looks, no comments, no problem. I did not find this believable, that they would not interact with one person who has an issue with the difference with their race or that they themselves would not have any issues.
