Book Review: Who is more monstrous: Victor Frankenstein/His creation?

This novel invites us to make an analogy between Victor Frankenstein and the mythic Prometheus. Prometheus is a creator who moulds the first human out of clay using fire he has stolen from the heavens; he is subsequently punished by the Gods for his presumption with eternal torment. The implication is that Victor Frankenstein is one of these over-reachers who refuses to accept limitations no matter what the consequences are. He becomes the embodiment of an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. After finishing the book, we are left wondering if he is punished for the daring act of usurping God in his creation as with Prometheus, or for abandoning his creation as some mothers have been known to leave theirs in dustbins or on hospital doorsteps. The creature's narrative within this epistolary is particularly impressive - he describes some of the things we have always wanted to remember ourselves or ask a newborn child, like for example, what it feels like when you suddenly come into being, realise consciousness and all seven senses kick in at once. A truly magnificent, thought provoking novel whose themes and ideologies will stay with you for years to come.
