Book Review: It's Alive!

DH Press have issued a series of novels using the classic Universal Studio's monster movies from the 1930s and 1940s. Others in the series feature The Wolf-Man, The Mummy and Dracula.
`The Shadow of Frankenstein' takes place after the events in the `Bride of Frankenstein' movie. Frankenstein and his wife have fled to London. The monster escapes from the debris which had buried him and manages to stow himself away with the doctor's luggage. I was going to suggest that the reader would need to suspend their belief at this point because the monster manages to hitch a ride on the carriage that the luggage and servants are on, without being noticed. However, the novel is about a man-made `human' consisting of dead body parts including a flat head, and electrodes in his neck. If you're going to be annoyed about details such as this, then you won't enjoy this novel.
Once in London, Frankenstein sets about discovering the reasons behind the monster's madness. He visits Burke and Hare's Medical Supply Warehouse because those gentlemen obtained the body parts for Dr. Waldman's college lectures, including the brain which was stolen for Frankenstein's purpose (as seen in Universal's `Frankenstein'). Meanwhile, Frankenstein's wife, Elizabeth, is on the brink of insanity as a result of her kidnap ordeal in `Bride'; there is the appearance, back on his old stamping ground, of Jack the Ripper who has managed to prolong his life by supernatural means; and the Frankenstein monster is tentatively befriended by a couple of ladies of the night.
Stefan Petrucha, an author I had not read before, is clearly a skilled storyteller and he has an obvious love of the two films from which this novel draws its main characters. In your mind's eye, you can see Boris Karloff and Colin Clive as this story unfolds. If you enjoyed the films, then this novel should appeal.
British readers may be slightly annoyed by some of the American phrases that are used between English characters such as, "I'll go get food" instead of "I'll go and get food", and distances are sometimes measured in blocks, as in, "He lives in a house two blocks from here". But, these are minor annoyances that will probably not trouble the American readership that the novel is primarily intended for.
This is an enthralling read from a talented writer who skilfully manages to introduce new elements while keeping the two films' integrity intact.
