Book Reviews of Fray

Book Review: Shiny
Summary: 4 Stars

I enjoyed Fray. It's not a towering piece of epic art, but it's a good story and fun to read. Since it's Joss Whedon, there's snappy dialogue, teenage girls with superpowers, and flying cars. Also a hellmouth, abyssal sidekicks, and a hybrid axe/spear legendary weapon.

One thing I love about the way this man writes science fiction is, he doesn't get caught up in the technology. Other (lesser) writers focus on the complexity of their rayguns, space ships, and artificial planets. Whedon focuses on the complexity of his characters. Fray is a graphic novel about people, not so much glittery space things that incinerate worlds (though there is a humongous insecty demon). It's about family, as all Joss's stories are.

Anyway, I liked it. It didn't blow up my mind real good, but it was very cool. And ultimately, I think that's what Joss was aiming for.

Book Review: Mmm.. stake
Summary: 4 Stars

For one uninitiated in the world of Buffy and slayers generally, this was a fine introduction. Mr. Wheedon seems incapable of writing bad dialogue or creating boring charaters, so the result is a fascinating new universe that draws to a close entirely too soon (hence the 4 stars... What can I say? I'm greedy).

Book Review: more Jossy goodness
Summary: 5 Stars

Another excellent bit of work from Joss Whedon. Keeps the Slayer mythology alive with new elements that fit right in. I remember how excited I was in Season Seven of BTVS to see Fray's scythe show up, even when I hadn't read the comic yet - an excellent way to tie the two together.

Book Review: Joss Whedon NEVER Fails!
Summary: 5 Stars

a friend recommended this book to me. i had never heard of it, but being a long-time fan of Joss Whedon's other work (Buffy, Firefly, his Astonishing X-Men run), i quickly picked it up . . . and i'm glad i did! set in the distant future, it takes place in the same "world" that Buffy takes place in, though you don't have to be any fan of the show to enjoy the book. a girl, Fray, is selected to be the next Slayer and with her demonic body guard, reluctantly begins a war against the vampires. it's a fantastic story filled with Whedon's trademark humor, pathos, and action. if you like Whedon, there's only one question: why haven't you read this yet?!?

Book Review: WISH JOSS WOULD DO ONE OF THESE FOR TV
Summary: 5 Stars

Joss picks up the slayer story but with a nice change it is set in the future. In a world gone a little bit crazier than our own Josh sets up his story so that those new to the slayer mythos and us old timers can enjoy the ride and understand what is going on. If you like the slayer story or just want to enjoy a fun graphic novel check it out. The art work is decent and the story moves quickly with a nice twist. Enjoy!
