Book Reviews of Freaky FridayBook Review: WANT A CHEAP THRILLER!? READ THIS BOOK Summary: 3 Stars
Freaky Friday is a great book about a little girl and a mother who hate each other and suddenly they wake up one morning and they are each other! They have to go about their entire day acting and being different people an on the way, they run into all sorts of odd situations. This was a great book that kept me entertained for hours and always kept me on my toes. It is kind of a suspenseful book and I would recommend it to people of most ages. Actually, I would recommend it to young children and teenagers. I enjoyed this book because it was more laid back than most books that I have read. It was somewhat of a children's book yet still is entertaining for most anyone.
Book Review: a fun read, but doesn't go far enough Summary: 4 Stars
This book, about a mother and daughter swapping bodies one memorable day, is very, very different than either of its movie treatments. In some ways it's better, in some ways worse. But it is an enjoyable, light read, appropriate for children 11 and up. If possible, I'd probably have given it a 3 1/2
Unlike the second movie (it's been too long since the original for me to recall details), we only follow the narrator--the daughter-now-mom--for the day, not her mother-now-daughter. I felt that Rogers fails here with voice. The narrator simply copes with the parenting responsibilities too neatly and sounds too mature for the behavior that set up the swap in the first case (the explanation of this is both too mysterious and too pat). Yes, she forgets to pick up a kid and screws up the wash, but she never really makes us feel just how poorly a teen would cope, or the emotional tumult she's experiencing.
When the inevitable moment comes when the swap is no longer sustainable, it seems like our narrator wants to return to her body because things are hard, not because she has any understanding of the difficulties of being a mom. And the mom never seems to find pretending to be a teen more difficult than eating marshmallows she hates and having to fake a disgusted attitude towards her son. This is not a deep reflection on mother-daughter relations, which is disappointing because you get the sense it could have been.
It's a little weird when the daughter awakes in the bed her mother shares with her dad. I can understand why the mother is single in the film (if I remember correctly) as it circumvents the inherent incestuous overtones of this situation. However, Rogers glosses the issue over so neatly that it's off-putting.
There's also a strange scene at a liquor store and a small amount of romance. Boris is a highly entertaining character, but could have been used to greater effect. Also, their relationship could have been less superficial and based on appearance.
Ironically, some of the funniest stuff is at the very end, after the switch is reversed. (I won't spoil the hilarity with details here.) I also found the scene with the housekeeper totally hilarious.
All-in-all, read _Freaky Friday_ for laughs on a rainy day, at the pool, or when your sick. You'll have fun. Just don't expect it to be exactly like the movie or to be substantive in any significant measure.

Book Review: nothing really happened! Summary: 3 Stars
This book is about a girl and her mom changing bodies. I liked that idea but I wish the author made something HAPPEN in the book!!! I mean, it was getting kinda boring in the end.
