Simply amazing, H.G Bissinger truly captures the thrill high school football in a book. AS look into the lives of the high school football players of Odessa,Texas, Friday Night Lights chronicles the emotions of players, games and the community of Odessa.
The detail of this book is amazing. From the very first page H.G. Bissinger uses impressive imagery to showcase Odessa. His diction paints a vivid image of the town of Odessa. as the book moves on to other topics such as racism Bissinger tends to sharpen his craft using min biographies from community members as flashbacks to keep the reader involved. The description of the games is just as pure. As a former HS football player and a huge fan of the movie I found this book very interesting. It kept my attention the whole way through. Personally I felt it was just as good if not better then the movie. it was nice to see how the movie and the book compared and differed. I would definitely suggest this book to anyone. Football fans or not. I think this is a great book for anyone who hasn't seen the movie. As someone who read the book after I saw the movie I would recommend that if you've seen the movie and haven't read the book this is a MUST READ. All in all, GREAT BOOK.
Book Review: Frieday Night Lights Summary: 4 StarsHave you ever wondered what it would be like to play football in Texas? Not only that, but infront of 20,000 screaming fans? That is what it is like to play for the Permian Panthers. The school is in a tiny town in Odessa, Texas which is mostly used for oil. But on Friday night, it is all about football.
I personally thought that this book was pretty good. One of the reasons is because I am a football fan. If you don't like football you won't like this book very much. The only part I really didn't like was the ending. I'm not going to spoil it though.
The reason I really liked this book as well, is because it goes into detail. During the games it says every detail. From the look of the jersey, to the pace of the game. I just loved it. I think that if you like football or competition then read this book, but if you don't, do not read it.
Book Review: frday night review Summary: 5 StarsFriday night lights, is awesome book it is about at football team called the Permian Panthers which is a team in Texas. This story is taking place in 1988.It is based on a true story. The team is trying to do the same thing they always do and that's go to state. Their first game was a blow out but they lost there best play Boobie Miles, but in the games to come they have a new stare player emerge. They won all but two of their games and their fates lie with a coin.
I liked this book because it was about football and triumph, and I also liked this book because it was almost pure luck that they made it that far.
I would recommend this book to someone that likes football.
Book Review: Superb book on culture, values, and football Summary: 5 StarsThis is a remarkable book about high school football and American culture. Author Hal Bissinger spent months in the west Texas town of Odessa, following the Panthers of Permian High School during their exciting 1988 season. The author captures the feel of the town and the many heart-stopping moments as the Panthers contend for the state title. Readers see that the Panthers are a perennial contender via a combination of solid coaching, endless practice and determined players. Of course, the town's fanatical populace helps - how many high schools have stadiums that seat 19,000 fans? We also get to know several personalities; Gary Gaines is a skilled and hard-working coach, but may be too nice for his job. Quarterback Mike Winchell is likeable, shy and non-confident, while linebacker Ivory Christian mixes talent and ambitions of becoming a minister with skepticism for the football circus to which he's addicted. The author also covers the town's sociology, racial strains, educational system, stagnant oil economy, and conservative politics.
This is more than just a great book about football - it's also a striking look at U.S. Culture and our attachment to sports (one that apparently angered some in Odessa). This superb effort was turned into a pretty good 2004 movie starring Billy Bob Thornton.
Book Review: I Loved It! Summary: 5 Stars Friday Night Lights
By: H.G. Bissinger
Gary Gaines is the coach of the 1988 Permian high school football team in Odessa, TX. Odessa is a town who's hopes and dreams all depend on how 17 year old kids perform on the football field. The town depends on football so much that Gary Gaines makes more money then the principal of the school. His team features a bunch of different players with a bunch of different reasons to play football... Some for the popularity, some to get a scholarship to college, and some because of pressure from parents and the community. But what will happen to the Permian Panthers when their star player goes down and everything seems to not go their way?
Friday Night Lights is based on a true story and has been one of the most beloved sports novels since it's release. It is now made into a movie ,which is great to watch after you read the book.
I love Friday Night Lights and it is one of my favorite novels and I love H.G Bissinger who also wrote books like A Prayer In the City. I would recommend it to everyone 12 and up. It's not for younger kids because of choice words and teen drinking. If you want to be sucked in by a book where you are always wondering what will happen next Friday Night Lights is right for you!
