Book Review: Alan Moore: To Hell and back!
Summary: 5 Stars

If I had started reading the appendix of the book, I'd rate it with 5 stars just because of the research Alan Moore performed to write this story. This masterpiece about "Jack, the Ripper" was written based on true facts, and the blanks of the history were filled with Alan's imagination. Besides, to give us the perfect impression of the dark side of London in 1888, Eddie Campbell used a raw style of drawing which conduced our mind to the secrets and the horror of that age.

The focus of the work is on the reasons why the crimes were performed by "Jack", and who else were involved in them. The identity of the ripper is no mistery for the reader, but why he did that in a so refined and methodic way.

In the beginning I thought the book was a little too long. But, as I was reaching the end, I became so involved with the complexity of the story that I stopped paying attention to the number of pages.

It is a must see comic book, with a high level of horror and violence, but also with a proportional level of intelligence and mistery. Reading this book is a good way to make us remember that Hell can be very near of us, sometimes inside our minds.

Book Review: An Astonishing Achievement; Much Better Than The Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This astonishing graphic novel has the complexity and power of the best prose fiction, plus the visual impact of good art. "From Hell" is a mind-blowing mythic exploration of "the fourth dimension"--the hidden architecture of history. Ostensibly about Jack the Ripper, its about just him like "Moby-Dick" is just about whale-hunting. Moore's script is brilliant and bone-chilling. Campbell's artwork captures the feeling of "the past" in an immediately arresting way. It would take a TV miniseries to cover all the material on religion and history included here (the recent dumb movie version starring Johnny Depp and Heather Graham didn't even try.) "From Hell" is already a classic of the horror genre, and a significant literary achievement besides.

Book Review: An absolutely amazing piece of work, by far Alan moore's best book
Summary: 5 Stars

From Hell is a graphic novel set in 1888 London during the times of the Jack the ripper slayings. You the main character is actually a little bit of every one. Of course there is a detective but you will see the story from the part of view of the detectives, Prostitutes, the police on the cases and of course jack the ripper himself. At first the beginning of the book doesn't really make any sense. You just happen to go from person to person. One minute it will take you to a prostitute and next you will be sons to the hire of the throne. Its not until like chapter 2 you begin to understand why these people had any thing to do with the jack the ripper slayings.

The plot is absolutely rock solid. There are reasons for every ones being in this book. The art is some of the best art I've seen in a graphic novel. The actual way you read the words makes it feel like you are in there actual time. I normally don't read books that are like 600 pages but this book had me hooked for a while. Once you start, you won't stop.

Book Review: Another masterpiece from the great Alan Moore
Summary: 5 Stars

While Alan Moore will go down in comics history for Watchmen, his painstakingly researched synopsis of Jack the Ripper and the Whitechapel Murders is almost as equally great. Moore teamed up with artist Eddie Campbell to show us the horrific dread and gloomy atmosphere of a city in terror of a killer. Thanks to Moore's great writing, the reader is drawn into this massive story from the first page on as we are introduced to the killer himself (his identity based on Moore's own research along with specualted opinions and hearsay) and Campbell's scrathy yet beautiful black & white art sustains the atmosphere of From Hell perfectly. Eventually it would be made into a film starring Johnny Depp and Heather Graham, and even though I liked that as well, this graphic novel beats it on every level (if you liked the film I strongly suggest checking this out, and I guarantee you'll love this). The characterizations, dialogue, art, and riveting storyline keep the reader interested up until the final panel, and whether you like comics or not this is an essential read no matter who you are.

Book Review: Awful. Hands down the worst graphic novel I've ever read.
Summary: 1 Stars

I really like some of Alan Moore's other works, but he has TOTALLY missed the mark with From Hell. Despite having one of the most fascinating stories of the century (the Jack the Ripper murders) as a backdrop, he fails to convincingly develop any kind of story. I got the sense that he pieced together a lot of his own philosphical essays, inserted them into the mouths of various individuals involved with the murders, and packaged it as a graphic novel. Although Moore clearly is himself fascinated by Jack the Ripper, he fails to weave any coherent storyline around him.

Also, the graphics by Eddie Campbell are just terrible - many of the characters are indistinguishable from one another.

If you (like me) are a fan of Watchmen and The Killing Joke, you will be profoundly underwhelmed by From Hell.
