Book Review: From Hell is Ok yet really good? Summary: 3 Stars
I thought this was an extremely good Graphic novel, but it had its WTF moments. For example (no Spoiler), there is a part where (if your like me)you get choked up with emotions over one of the characters, but then Alan Moore goes and hits you in the head with a frying pan (making a B movie error). This is not a novel on his Theory of the Jack the Ripper Killings for one. So let me get that out of the way if you want to buy this. Its a story he created with little bits of Jack the Ripper facts, but it ISN'T his theory on the killings. A lot of reviewers have that confused. If you read it, you will understand that right away. If you want a Graphic novel with some dark and existential meaning then get this novel, but if you want something that you would read again, then don't get this novel. Its a one time reader. Also there are like only 2 characters you might feel anything for. So don't expect a tragedy nor a horror for that matter. I think it should be next to last on your Alan Moore list (DC comic collection being very last)
Book Review: Geat story, painful art and lettering Summary: 3 Stars
Let me start by saying this is a great story.
It combines police work, intrigue, politics, and mysticism in one package.
But you have to WANT to read this novel because the poor lettering and the poor artwork make it very difficult to read.
Some may consider it to be part of the "art" of the graphic novel, but I really think they could do better.
If it was not for the poor artwork and the poor lettering, I would have given it 4 or 5 stars.
For parents:
This is NOT a graphic novel for teenagers or younger.
It has graphic and explicit sex, violence, and defamation of the female figure.
Book Review: Get the Missing portion of From Hell on Amazon Auctions Summary: 5 Stars
One of the best comic book graphic novels ever written, From Hell mixes detailed historical research with a gripping story that originally appeared in 11 issues of the magazne complete with foot notes. This book edition contains the complete From Hell graphic novel from issues 1-10 but does not include From Hell 11 which contains a complete 20 page story by Moore- a brilliant piece on why we are interested in the Ripper phenomena at all as well as articles on the history of graphics used in the 1880's to create the ripper legend. From Hell 11 is out of print but available complete with autograph from myself who wrote several of the articles in it from the Amazon Auction section for $10 + postage.
Book Review: Good book, not great Summary: 3 Stars
I was a big fan of the Watchmen and Top Ten, though I haven't enjoyed all of Moore's work nearly as much. So I picked up this collection without overly high expectations.I found myself engrossed by the story, but the art was so unclear that I found myself frustrated. The use of a large number of panels per page was a fine choice, and I think that a dark gritty approach was called for by the material. But in many panels I couldn't even tell what was represented, indistinct figures blend into the indistinct background so that many panels seem to be just a square full of shading with no forms for the shading to fill. Overall I'd recommend this to all the Alan Moore groupies and people who have the patience to sit and stare at each page until some sort of image finally becomes clear.
