Book Reviews of From Mud to MusicBook Review: Great book, nice pictures and a lot of information Summary: 5 Stars
Love the book and the cd. If you like making musical instruments out of clay or want to learn about them. This is your "must have" book!
Book Review: Highly recommend this book Summary: 5 Stars
We just received a copy of From Mud to Music book and CD, sent to us because we have photos in it. Therefore we hoped we'd like it; also inclined to be hyper critical if we didn't. We are delighted with it.
This is a beautiful, large format book with hundreds of color photos of clay musical instruments from around the world, contemporary and ancient. The text is very readable and conveys the author's enthusiasm for his subject. Just to see the variety of forms and types of instruments is fascinating. Who would have imagined a clay violin, pipe organ or hybrid fiddle/didjeridu/drum? (Someone, obviously.)
The information includes history, descriptions of the instruments and how they work, and lots of how-to.
The CD has a good variety of music samples, with a track list and appendix in the book describing each cut, as well as references to photos of the instruments. The photos also have references to the CD. It is well organized, with cross references, glossary, index, resources list, and contributors contact info.
This is one of the best pottery books we've ever seen. We think it will become a classic and should create quite a stir among clay artists and musicians.
Book Review: INSPIRING REFERENCE FOR POTTERS!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I am currently working with reproductions of Pre-Columbian pottery. This book offers a great deal of inspiration & instruction for my projects. I already have a functioning double vessel whistling creation based on the reference from Brian Ransom on page 80 in the book. I also have functioning vertical, horozontal flutes and several repors of Pre-Columbian whistles - how exciting. Thanks to Barry Hall
Book Review: Let's play the clay, okay? Summary: 5 Stars
This book is truly amazing! It's also pretty comprehensive, covering a range of instruments. Just about any instrument can be made using clay, though there are some limiting factors, such as the material's rigidity once fired. The book also covers a history of various instruments, as well as including instructions on how to make a number of them. I especially enjoyed listening to the accompanying CD.
Book Review: Musical Clay Summary: 4 Stars
From Mud to Music is a wonderful book, so filled is it with documentation, visual and textual. I have been using it in my classroom. The only criticism I have is that I wish everything pictured had instructional info.
