Book Reviews of Fu Manchu: The Zayat Kiss / The Severed Fingers (Two Complete Adventures)

Book Review: "The chill hand of King Fear --
Summary: 3 Stars

-- had touched one and all ..."

They just don't write them like that any more, and good riddance, mostly. Rohmer's Fu Manchu series started in 1913, long before political correctness or even civil rights. The series kick-starts its emotional pull with with the unquestioned threat of the "Yellow Peril," whatever the heck that might have meant, against the bastions of anglo-ness. These 1930s comics wallow in racial stereotypes, sexism that works against both sides (to today's eyes, at least), weird pseudoscience, and a vast reliance on one near-superhuman white guy to save us all. And, for some reason, it seems necessary to afflict bad guys with scoliosis, since everyone knows (or knew) that hunchbacks just aren't right and good guys stand up straight.

So, buy into all that, or immunize yourself against it, or study it as a sad relic of past society, and sink yourself into it. There's not a lot of comic in the book's 100-ish pages, since each two-page spread holds only four panels, a remnant of the days before the newspaper's funny section started its own form of image compression. Printing of these B&W comics isn't the most crisp, but works for the imagery it carries. If you have any taste at all for the bad taste in Sax Rohmer's originals and their cohort, have a blast.
