Book Reviews of Full Moon Rising (Riley Jensen, Guardian, Book 1)Book Review: A Murder and Mayhem Bookclub review Summary: 3 StarsThe full moon approaches and the werewolf population of Melbourne flock to the clubs. Working for the Directorate of Other Races, Riley Jenson is more than aware of what goes on behind the club's closed doors and of the numerous power struggles that rage every day and night between rivals of the packs. Riley's brother and housemate Rhoan works as a guardian for the Directorate and places himself at risk every time he walks out the door. Tonight, Riley is truly worried, as Rhoan has gone missing in the week in which werewolves are even harder to handle than usual. It is common knowledge that the twins are both werewolves, but few are aware that they are related, let alone exactly what it is that they both are. Born to a female werewolf, twins Riley and Rhoan were fathered by a vampire.
Sensing that her adventurous brother is in trouble, Riley is impatient with the Directorate's caginess as to Rhoan's whereabouts. The Directorate's not-so-secret agenda has, for some time, been to have Riley become a guardian also, effectively making her something of a shield between humans and the predilections of her own kind. Fate certainly seems to be leading her in that direction, as the drop dead gorgeous vampire who turns up on her doorstep turns out to be the person of inquiry Rhoan was investigating before he disappeared. When she is attacked twice in a few days by vicious vampires (who all seem to be clones of each other), Riley is more than grateful to accept the help of the mysterious and disturbing Quinn who is conducting a search of his own. Riley must dive into the chaos of the week before full moon, fighting to suppress what comes naturally for a young and healthy werewolf while desperately searching for the one she loves most in the world.
No doubt at all, the urban fantasy fiction genre is going through a boom and if we all could buy stocks in it, we'd be sitting pretty. Author and Melbournite Keri Arthur has created something unique here with her fantasy world of vampires and werewolves, which is saying something when you consider how many series of the type have been created in the last few years. There's a definite target market there with female readers who have mostly drifted across from two directions - crime fiction or romantic fiction. Science fiction gets a nod too as there can be a considerable amount of monster etiquette that needs to be observed.
It's a given that there was always going to be a heavy slap of sex and violence, the latter of course which would always go with the territory and the first definitely not being of the polite and courteous variety. FULL MOON RISING does, in a very efficient manner, convey a good dark sense of menace of murderous activities being conducted under cover of night, as all bland and colourless urbanites sleep unaware. As the protagonist is not in a role of authority to prey on the monsters, being one of them herself, this gives a more realistic and unapologetic view of what drives the beasts and how it came to be so.
As this novel is the first of a series and trying to lay it all out there in the first effort, characterization seriously needed a polish and this may have been achieved with future works. Secondary characters are merely sketched, which is expected with the threading of possible future plot lines throughout this work. This is a quick and easy read and nothing is going to bog you down or keep you up at night; FULL MOON RISING serves merely to entertain and does it very well.
Keri Arthur has written fifteen published novels of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. FULL MOON RISING is the first of five in the Guardian series.
