Last of the series about Alexander the Great, Ms.Renault really surpasses herself.The book starts of with Alexander last ours of life,his death and the chaos that he lives behind.Perdikkas his friend a military, tries to keep the army out of the reach of mutiny.Here enters Arridaios the handcapped brother of Alexander.Comes to the throne and everything turns wrong.He has the face of Philip of Macedonia,and yet he cannot hold public office.He is retarded.What will happen to him? The unborn heirs of Alexander from Roxane of Sogdiana,and Stateira daughter of Darius? What will happent to the widow of Hephastion?
The army is in disarray,things are different and yet everybody expects Alexander to wake up and come and guide them.The body is left for 2 days,without mummification,and yet when they go back into Alexander's bedroom,his not decomposing.His body looks gorgeous.
A very sad book of the last hours of the Greatest Conqueror of all time.Iskandar.How sad as to what happened to Macedonia, Persia and all the conquered territories after his death.
