Book Review: The title is slightly misleading, but a good book on slap bass

I bought this book because one of my students had it, and recommended it.
Firstly, the product description here is wrong and - taken with the title - gives a slightly confusing picture. WHAT IS HIP (Tower of Power) is DEFINITELY NOT in this book. And this is a book on Funk Bass - but it's mainly about slap bass. There's 94 pages and less than 10 of them cover fingerstyle playing. That's why this only gets 4 stars.
Anyway FUNK BASS takes you from the basics (thumb slaps, pops etc) right through to some pretty advanced stuff (double thumb, triple plucks etc).
What is ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON about this book, is that as you work through technique exercises designed to get you playing with your thumb, popping etc, there are SONGS - glorious, real life songs - for you to practice along with.
The CD that comes with the book seems well recorded, the examples are crisp (the bass playing is very good, very clean) and there are full backing tracks for the song examples (though some of the sounds are a bit MIDI/cheesy - but I've certainly heard worse).
So if you're into slapping, or wanna learn, this book is one of the four products you definitely need (The other three are Stuart Claytons Ultimate Slap Bass bool - buy it from the UK, it's cheaper - Alexis Sklarevski's DVD, and Tony Oppenheim's Slap It.
If you want to learn to slap - or improve - a must buy.
