Book Reviews of Garnethill

Book Review: "But on Monday night she woke up and looked at him and knew it was over."
Summary: 4 Stars

Written in the quirky idiom of modern day Glasgow, Mina's feisty protagonist, Maureen O'Donnell, is a recent graduate of Scotland's mental health system, recovering from a breakdown and still attending weekly meetings with a therapist. After eight months with a married boyfriend, a psychologist who worked at the hospital where Maureen was a patient, she is ready to say goodbye and move on. But before that can happen, waking up one morning after a wicked drunk, Maureen discovers Douglas tied to a chair in her flat, his throat slit end to end, nearly decapitated. Trying to sort through the awful image of her slain lover and her conflicted feelings, Maureen is snatched up by the local police and interrogated. Given her stay in the mental ward, Maureen is hardly surprised by this turn of events; but when her brother, Liam, a drug dealer, is also questioned, the siblings are increasingly worried that they have been set up by a clever murderer.

While Maureen and Liam consider the ramifications of a snide police inspector's obvious preference for them as suspects, Maureen is further distracted by a severely dysfunctional family who live in active denial of the circumstances that drove her to the breakdown; everywhere she turns, Maureen is questioned, by the police, her mother and sisters (whom the police refer to as an "unsavory" family) and her own self-doubts. Returning to the hospital where Douglas worked, Maureen uncovers disturbing information. Given the way the authorities have treated her thus far, Maureen decides to pursue the mystery on her own, running a parallel investigation that becomes increasingly dangerous as she discovers the connections that ultimately lead to murder. Mining the complex issues of mental health, Maureen confronts her own past and that of other unfortunate women she has met through her experiences, recognizing their extraordinary vulnerability for exploitation and abuse. With the aid of her best mate, Leslie, the two brave young women whip from place to place on Leslie's motorbike, determined to right a terrible wrong and expose a particularly heinous killer.

As a female protagonist burdened with the taint of mental illness, Maureen bravely faces off the police, who don't believe her, her alcoholic mother, who will sacrifice a daughter's well-being for her own self-delusion, and overwhelming circumstances where the helpless are the pawns of their prey. The impressively imaginative Mina once again displays her great talent for dissecting the human condition, her characters finely drawn, the plot thick with menace. As stubborn and determined as any woman with a cause, Maureen stands up for those too long ignored, herself included, her quick tongue and saucy attitude endearing as she butts heads with authorities and walks away stronger for her trouble. No matter what comes her way- and there is plenty in the next two volumes of this trilogy- Maureen is a chain-smoking, rough-talking survivor, savvy and vulnerable, noble and impulsive, a Scottish Everywoman, a new face in a tired, cynical world.
