Book Reviews of Geisha

Book Review: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Summary: 5 Stars

I lived in Japan for a short while and ever since returning I can't seem to get their culture out of my head. I've devoured anything Japanese... And fell in love with Geisha... Liza has done a great job writing this book... I only wish I read it prior to reading "Memoirs of a Geisha"... It would have given me a better perspective, but Arthur Golden does a great job of explaining everything as well...

If you like Geisha, get this book, if you LOVE Geisha, you need this book!

Book Review: Everything you ever wanted to know about Geisha.
Summary: 4 Stars

I loved the book Memoirs of a Geisha as a fictional account and it was my first introduction to the Geisha lifestyle. I feel that Liza Dalby's "Geisha" is a book version of a FAQ on Geisha. Everything I ever wanted to know is in this book. I think the most interesting parts are when Ms. Dalby explains the differences between a prostitute and a geisha, although, with my westernized upbringing there are still some hazy areas. It was amazing that she, as a foreign woman, was allowed to train to become a Geisha for her research. I found the writing a bit disjointed at times and would have preferred the book to have been separated into two different books, the memoirs and the Geisha cultural study.

Book Review: GEISHA - immersion in the life
Summary: 5 Stars

Liza Dalby's book takes the reader on an imaginative journey through the Willow World, full of the many flavors and nuances that make up this very special part of Japanese society. Dalby's writing and observations are so wonderful that I was able to picture myself in her place as she gradually "became" a member of the Pontocho geisha sisterhood. This volume covers the joys, sadness, hard work and dedication inherent in geisha, from maiko to older, experienced women. I"ve been to Japan and Ms. Dalby was very accurate in her depiction of life in Japan and especially Kyoto. What an enjoyable and informative book!

Book Review: Geisha
Summary: 4 Stars

In `Geisha' Liza Dalby has managed to write a book studying the lives of Geisha and how their art developed, whilst at the same time making it flow like a novel. This book is an in-depth look at Geisha life and also touches upon general life in Japan as well, which makes for fascinating and captivating reading. It is illustrated throughout with photos and a few charts/graphs to demonstrate points made. Liza is the only (at the time of writing) foreigner to be introduced into the Geisha world and this affords her, and us, with a unique insight into the traditions and lifestyle of Geisha. She writes with genuine humour and with sympathy for the lives Geisha lead and the sacrifices they make for their art and this is passed on to the reader. I found myself completely immersed in the lifestyles and aspirations of those described and had a deeper understanding of Geisha life as a result. An informative read, written in a beautiful way, what more can you ask for?

Book Review: Great Information
Summary: 5 Stars

The book is full of great information about the lives of Geisha. There are many great pictures and great historic notes. There are references to many-generation geisha lines and information about the families. The greatest pictures are those of Dalby being changed from the American girl into a sophisticated Japanese geisha. Wonderful! Highly recommended to anyone interested in this subject field.
