Book Review: Tough minded book

This is in the best sense of the word, a tough book. It makes the reader take a real look at life and demands that we understand the pain and frustration as well as the laughter and promise that make us human. Seen through the eyes of sixty-year-old Jack Scanlon, we review his life, especially the gritty years of his youth in depressed and depressing New England mill towns. We feel his shyness and his sensitivity. We experience the camaraderie, which is so essential to successful adolescence. And we suffer the pain of his dysfunctional family. If in the end we have not discovered any great truth that makes it all worthwhile, we have shared a powerful story of one man's search for personal worth and meaning. And, we know that we, like the protagonist, must go on; we may not overcome, but we most certainly must persevere.
