Book Review: A flawed masterpiece

Mr Skrabec sets out to write about George Westinghouse the man - and in part he succeeds. We are left with an image of, indeed, a gentle genius. Unfortunately the evidence of his genius is witheld from the reader. His great inventions, like the railroad air brake, the 'triple valve' or the 'friction draft' gear are never described in sufficient technical detail to allow the reader fully to appreciate their significance. How one longs for illustrations! The book would have benefitted hugely from an editor who might have weeded out the endless repetitions which clutter the text - and even from a proof reader; there is scarcely a page on which the wrong word has not survived into the finished text. The repetitions and the errors mean that effort is required to keep reading.
