Book Reviews of George and Martha: The Complete Stories of Two Best FriendsBook Review: George & Martha: Problem Solvers Summary: 5 StarsMy fiance and I had been struggling to come up with vows for our upcoming wedding for some time. Then, one day, it hit me. As a children's librarian, I had so many resources at my fingertips, it was a wonder that I hadn't thought about it before. I brought home a stack of George and Marthas from work and we have each picked a story to read to each other at our wedding. Thank you James Marshall, wherever you are, for giving us something that so perfectly illustrates what we are trying to convey!
Book Review: Life Lessons Summary: 5 StarsWe started watching the George and Martha TV series while living in Australia. I don't know who is more enamoured with the series - my daughters, or myself. These stories, different from the tv show as far as I can tell, all teach a lesson in friendship. It's a fun way to let those lessons about being a good friend sink in with your child. George and Martha are hilarious, and we love following their adventures. It is a book that even an adult without children might enjoy reading. A real page turner and a well made, quality book!
Book Review: My 6 year old ADORES this book! Summary: 5 StarsI did something I've never done before - bought a book based only on Amazon reviews and by the frequency that this book appeared on peoples' lists of favorite books. And I was not disappointed - this is a great book.My 6 year old is a fast reader, but had viewed reading only as a task to get through - not to enjoy and savor. This book changed all that. At first I was disappointed to see that the stories in the chapters were so short, but I have come to see that the brevity is part of the attraction for new readers - they get to turn pages a lot! The lessons about friendship are wonderful, and very, very funny. You could buy the paperback books with these different stories, but my child LOVES having this huge hardcover collection of stories to read through - it's wonderful! We have only had it for a few months, but it gets read every night, and the use on the jacket cover already shows how much this book is treasured and loved. Mom & Dad love to listen to these stories, too.
Book Review: George and Martha are the best Summary: 5 StarsI showed this book to a friend of mine when we were both graduate students. He rolled his eyes, but when I came back into the room after having stepped out for a moment, he was laughing at it. A co-worker of mine was looking for some book recommendations, and I suggested this one for his nieces and nephews. He told me he could not make it all the way through the book when he was reading it out loud to them because he was laughing so hard he was crying. Do I need to say anything else to persuade you to buy this book? George and Martha are two of the funniest children's book characters of all time, and James Marshall is a much missed genius of children's stories. Enjoy it. You may even find yourself reading it once the kids have gone to bed.
Book Review: Grrrreat! Summary: 5 StarsAs I read these stories to my son it occurs to me that I am learning how to be a better friend too! In one of his lessons George teaches us about friendship when Martha gets a sunburn after having been told by George to put on sun tan lotion. When she gets burned he does not say "I told you so" because that is "not what friends are for"! That is the kind of person I would love my son to be. That is what person I want to be. Thanks!
