Germs, written by Judy Oetting and illustrated by Tad Herr is one of a series of books from Scholastic called Rookie Reader. The series is designed to guide children through the stages of independent reading. Color coded reading levels are on the back cover of each book, and inside the back cover of each book is a comprehensive word list of the vocabulary contained therein. The books in the series are designed to be of high interest to young readers with each one featuring a young child learning a new concept or solving a problem.
The focus of Judy Oetting's Germs is rhyme, an important concept for development of decoding skills and spelling. Each page of text in this little book features one rhyme. Young readers can use the framework of rhyme to anticipate and predict and to strengthen word attack skills. Children who have mastered rhyme enjoy the lyrical, repetitive sounds of this device. Even the nonfluent readers might be able to "read" the word tails in the following example after hearing the word nails by using context, the rhyme clue of nails and the initial t sound of tails.
The bright, colorful, bizarrely shaped germs are quite captivating but far from endearing. They're hideous and frightful and demand respect even though they can't be seen.
Over and over the young reader will read "Beware. They're there." The author presents an important message to young readers with this book and does it very effectively. Her message is fun, gentle and unmistakable. You can't see the germs but "Beware. They're there."
This is a worthwhile little book for purchase, reading, and rereading. Youngsters with whom I shared this book loved the graphics and enjoyed the author's use of rhyme. For those four, five and six-year-olds who are forever putting anything and everything into they're mouths, "Beware. They're there" can't be repeated often enough.
