Book Review: A classic text on military close-combat

Captain Fairbairn was a British colonial police-officer, prior to World War II. He worked in law-enforcement in Shanghai, which was quite possibly the most violent, crime-ridden city in the world.
Early in his career, Fairbairn was badly injured in a brutal encounter with street-thugs. Realizing he needed to better prepare himself, Fairbairn commenced on a thorough regimen of martial-arts training. Fairbairn became a master of close-combat, his skills encompassing the entire spectrum of lethal and non-lethal, armed and unarmed techniques and tactics. He was also an expert in tactical pistol-shooting, but that is covered in another book.
During World War II, Captain Fairbairn trained Commandos, and agents of the S.O.E. and O.S.S. in these fighting skills. Thousands of allied personnel learned from his program, ...and many of those people survived savage encounters with the enemy because of his influence.
I was an instructor in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. Much of the techniques portrayed in this book are identical to what what Marines (and other military forces)learn today. Krav Maga practitioners will see the similarities with their fighting-style (developed around the same time!). This is REAL fighting for survival. It works, ...because IT WORKS!
The techniques in this book are portrayed with drawn illustrations, depicting British military personnel fighting various Wehrmacht troops. For this factor alone, this book is an interesting historical insight into the beginnings of modern military close-combat.
