Book Reviews of Get Your War on

Book Review: "This Modern World" meets "South Park"
Summary: 5 Stars

I cannot say enough good things about this book. When I first heard about GYWO,it was from a blurb that appeared in the city's free alt-media paper back in the winter of 2001. It was,for the longest time, one of the best kept secrets on the internet. Sure, the profane dialogue and satirical commentary is funny and poignant but what adds to the humor is the artwork itself! Clearly pinched from some old comic like "Mary Worth" or "Apartment 3-G", the simplistic absurdity that comes from two guys slacking off in the office bitching about how...the War on Terrorism is hilarious almost to the point of surreal.Rees may have just earned a place in the cartoon world as the freshest and most sardonic political satirist since Gary Trudeau.

Book Review: A One Trick Pony
Summary: 2 Stars

Everyone digging this book is just reacting to hype. It's not that funny, not that insightful, and Rees seems compelled to throw in explicatives in every comic to cover the fact that he's not that talented and merely a one trick pony. Oh, the character said ... - It must be hilarious!

This is just a weak attempt by someone who got lucky enough to capitalize on the Zeitgeist of the moment. Rees may be sincere, but after the war is over, I think his 15 min. are up. Don't believe me? Check the Filing Technique and Karate Technique stuff - mundane with a capitol "M".

Book Review: A Sardonic Laugh Riot
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading this,I crack up when I watch all the SUV's in my neighborhood with their double sided window flags and huge "pride and power" bumper magnets. Buy this book only if you are ready to laugh that nervous laugh that you sometimes might have at a funeral.

Book Review: A masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

My first exposure to "Get Your War On" was a single frame of clipart found online. In the frame, a woman on the phone is exclaiming: "We can't find Osama because Arthur Anderson f----ing shredded him!"

As with The Onion's "attack on america" issue, "Get Your War On" was a well-timed, perfectly executed masterpiece of comedy and anger. And it still holds up today. It's not just funny... reading it gives you a feeling of relief: You're not alone, your fugitive thoughts are shared.

"Get Your War On" is for everybody who wants to indulge in the prevailing jingoistic anger of victimhood and revenge, but finds his mind getting in the way.

Book Review: An Authentic American Voice
Summary: 5 Stars

I began reading "Get Your War On" shortly after it began. I was a 9/11 iconoclast who felt alone and maybe even a little sociopathic as I coldly observed the victimhood-embracers around me. Reading David Rees' work gave me immense relief. It came from the heart of a fellow spirit; a cry of grief and rage over Bush's insane joke of a war.

Certainly many readers may be put off by Rees' street talk. (I grew up when middle class children seldom heard such words and many weren't printable.) But there is a difference between people who use profanity through ignorance--or hack writers who want an easy laugh--and David Rees. As a writer, his command of American vernacular English impresses me even more than David Mamet does in "Glengarry Glen Ross." Furthermore, his language is entirely suited to his purpose.

I've alway been a great fan of Tom Tomorrow. His use of old advertising images gives an additional level meaning to his work for those who remember the 50's. Although I'm amused by Rees' use of familiar clip art I believe he has the imagination to go much farther.

I urge you to buy and read this book. I, for one, am very eager to see where Rees' talent will take him next.
